Reading ByTenants needs no account and sets no cookies. Accounts are open only to a small group of invited testers for now. This page says what we collect. A full privacy policy replaces it before sign-in opens to everyone, and this page will say so when it does.
When you search or read a building page
We record that a building was looked up or viewed, and when, not who. We do not store your IP address, your browser details or any identifier with that record. We use these counts to see which buildings people care about and how many of them have tenant reviews yet.
We also use Vercel Web Analytics for page-view counts and which site sent a visitor. It sets no cookies and does not follow you across other sites.
Building pages can show a Google map, but only after you press “Show map”. Until then nothing is sent to Google; once you do, Google receives your request under its own privacy policy. The “Open in Google Maps” and “Street View” links work the same way: nothing is sent unless you follow them.
If you give us your email
The site asks for an email in two places: when you search for an address outside New York and ask to hear when we cover your city, and when you pick a New York neighbourhood on the map that we do not cover yet. We store that email and the place you named, and nothing else. We will use it once, to tell you that place is covered, and only for that place. No newsletter, no other messages, and we never share or sell it. To have it deleted sooner, write to privacy@bytenants.com.
If you send feedback, a dispute or a correction
The Feedback button stores your message, the page you sent it from, and an email address only if you add one. The dispute and correction forms store what you write and the email you give, so a person can reply. None of it is shared or sold. We don't store your IP address with any of them.
Stopping floods of requests
To stop scripts from flooding these forms or our counts, we count requests from each address for a short time (one minute to one hour). The count is kept under a scrambled, one-way form of your IP address, never the address itself, is not linked to what you sent, and is deleted the following night.
If you're an invited tester
Your invite link, or joining with a sign-up code, sets two cookies in that browser for 60 days: one, signed, that lets you reach the account pages, and one that only tells pages to show account buttons. Neither holds personal information. Signing in sets one more: the cookie that keeps you signed in.
Your account holds your email address and whatever you choose to add: records of your homes, photos, reviews. Photos are encrypted. Documents you use to verify that you lived somewhere are read once and deleted in the same moment; we keep only whether they matched (see how we verify). You can download everything or delete your account at any time from your account page.
If you write to us
Email to any bytenants.com address is kept in our mailbox so we can answer it, and is not used for anything else.
Who runs the systems
The site is hosted on Vercel and the database on Neon, both in the United States. Like any web host, Vercel keeps short-lived server logs that include IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running; we do not copy them into our database.
