How we make money

Right now, we don't. ByTenants is free, and everything on a building page is free to read without an account.

The rule we don't break

We never take money from anyone on the other side of a tenant on the page where they're reviewed: not a landlord, owner, property manager, eviction firm or tenant-screening company. None of them can pay to be shown first, answer first, look better, or have a review removed.

Some review sites sell landlords the “verified” badge that appears on their own buildings. Ours is started by the tenant, and nobody can buy it.

How we plan to pay for it later

• Moving help, if you ask for it. Someone keeping a move-in record is about to move. If they choose to, we may introduce them to one moving company. Only with their say-so, one company at a time, and nothing from their record is ever shared.
• Advertising, carefully. First, free space for tenant-advocacy nonprofits. Later, paid ads, never from landlords, brokers or anyone in the list above.
• Possibly, an optional subscription for extra tools. The building record itself stays free.

What we will never sell

• Anything that identifies a tenant, to a landlord or to anyone.
• Reports about a single building to its owner.
• Tenant screening data of any kind.
